The Book of Bikur Cholim is an almost 200-year-old donation book from the Jewish community of Pápa, Hungary. It is displayed in the Collective Exhibition of the Museum of Ethnography in Budapest. The book contains names of the charitable individuals who donated money to support the Jewish people.
To preserve the integrity of the original, the physical book is displayed behind glass. Visitors can explore its digitized version via a touchscreen interface, allowing them to flip through the pages without physically handling the book.
In addition to the interactive book, an LED display presents a real-time visualization of the donors' names, offering a contemporary reflection on a historical legacy.
Development
In this project, I controlled the page movement of the virtual book and processed the incoming user inputs through the overlay application on the touchscreen. I also created animations for both the touchscreen interface and the LED display.
You can see the interaction with the LED display below:
The animation on the big screen features particles that assemble whenever a visitor selects a name in the book. They move into a formation that is shaped like the graphic form of the name. Here you can see earlier stages of the development demonstrating this behavior:
Two applications run on the touchscreen: a transparent overlay app that handles pure UI interaction, and another that renders the virtual book along with additional animations highlighting the names. Check out what type of extra animations are included in the book:
