Varietas was created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Doctoral School at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) in Budapest, Hungary. The exhibition showcases the work of doctoral students and presents the history of the Doctoral School in an engaging way.

Visitors can browse through masterpieces and doctoral theses, and get to know current or former students through short videos and personal quotes.

The two pavilions in the university's main entrance hall, which house the majority of the exhibition, are made from recycled materials.

Development

A vital component of the exhibition is a wall of LED displays that react dynamically to visitor proximity. Guests can see the names of the doctoral students, random words from their quotes by them, and even their silhouettes formed from letters.

My role involved creating a letter-scrolling animation and assembling it with other existing ones on the LED display. The exhibition space was recreated in 3D to help us envision functionalities.

The guests were tracked by lidar sensors, and I was responsible for extracting the sensor data and integrating it into the visual system. This video shows an earlier phase of development where you can see the word scrolling animation in action. Initially, the letters appear as random, unintelligible characters. When someone approaches, the letters scroll into place, forming words and sentences within the user’s immediate vicinity.

Additionally, quotes appear when a guest remains in front of the display for a while. Here you can see simulations of a possible visitor represented by a red sphere turning blue when considered to be standing still:
